[Comments] London Film Festival Press Launch

The most significant two weeks in the British calendar for film are soon upon us, and it’s easy and indeed perfectly justified to begin feeling ridiculously excited now that the programme for The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival has been announced.

At the press launch this morning in the Odeon Leicester Square we were treated to 30 minutes of choice footage from some of the most anticipated films in the line-up of this year’s festival, which runs from October 14 to 29, and from just this brief morsel of the cornucopia of features, shorts and animation included in the diverse selection, it’s already clear that there is definitely a lot to look forward to.

For the festival’s prestigious Opening Night, Wes Anderson’s very entertaining-looking Fantastic Mr. Fox will have its world premiere and the director and some cast members, including Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman and Helen McCrory, will all be in attendance. As the other bookend to the festival, Sam Taylor-Wood’s highly anticipated Nowhere Boy, which looks at the early life of John Lennon, will premiere at the Closing Night Gala.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Also debuting on the London streets is the brilliant looking off-key comedy The Men Who Stare At Goats, which sees George Clooney as a supposed psychic soldier and part of an elite team that claims to be able to pass through solid walls and kill goats just by staring at them. Others that will hopefully tickle our funny bone will be The Informant!, for which director Steven Soderbergh will be in attendance, and the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man, while John Hillcoat’s apocalyptic The Road and the Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson-starrer Chloe will give our brains a thought-provoking workout.

Of the number of representatives of French cinema that the festival is playing host to this year, just some of the many to look forward to are MICMACS, which looks characteristically whimsical from the Amelie helmer Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and Jacque Audiard’s A Prophet, whose visceral intensity and prison-set crime drama gives it a sense of adrenalin a la this year’s Mesrine.

Also standing out from the crowd was Michael Haneke’s return to German language cinema in The White Ribbon, a black-and-white film looking at rural life in a German village preceding the First World War. Newcomer Malcolm Venville’s 44 Inch Chest offered up a memorable snippet of a prostrate Ray Winstone in a trashed apartment, while 30 seconds of Jim Jamusch’s The Limits Of Control was enough to garner interest in the director’s latest smart and bizarre work.

The list goes on. That summation only touches upon a handful of the treats in store in a festival line-up that ranges from the Nick Hornby-scripted drama An Education to the restoration of Anthony Asquith’s 1928 silent movie Underground via the story of poverty, obesity and abuse in the talk of Sundance, Precious.

To really get to grips with everything the hugely enthralling London Film Festival has to offer, a visit to the BFI website is definitely in order.

Imagination, inspiration and individuality. It was here in abundance at the press launch of the inaugural, London Bridge Festival as Hays Galleria transformed into a surreal, comic carnival. The charm of this evening was that anyone who walked by would be pulled into the maelstrom of motorcade madness, provided by Zipcar Theatre.

With a shared theme of car comedy, the acts performed, 'Granny Theft Auto', 'Crashing the Party' and 'Four Cars and a Clown,' were creative concoctions. They certainly gave a new dimension to 'joy riding.'

Cynics may say that this festival is a cheap imitation of Edinburgh.
They would be wrong. This taster suggests that the vision of Greg Tallent and Victoria Silverman will be executed with entertaining edge.

July is going to to be a celebration of established and burgeoning talent.
From film to theatre, poetry to live music, Showcasefringe recommends that you come along and check out one of the most creative event's of the summer.

Marcus Brigstocke is struggling with the

Festival director Greg Tallent is delighted that so many performers are taking part over the two weeks. He’s especially pleased that the festival will give many new acts the chance to shine, including at

Vyner Street In hackney London
is fast becoming the art oasis of east London surrounded by garages and workshops it plays host to a strange event every first Thursday of the month. Suddenly you’re driving or riding around and hundreds of people descend on the street to visit the lager array of galleries showing off their arts, paintings instillations and general arty stuff on a Thursday night.
Unlike any other exhibition the mood is jovial and good fun, a stranger comes up to me and asks “what do you think about this mate” while sipping a glass of beer as we look at a set of photo’s by William Nixon called lost Britain {See clip} I think there is something quite familiar about this images but a can’t put my finger on it.
Down stairs in the street another group of people are playing fine the art works which are hidden around the surrounding streets for them to find, but my favourite novelty is a ice-cream man but he’s not selling ice-cream he’s selling cones of paint in different colours which amazingly people buy, but I hope don’t eat, asked why ? He simply replies because its art.
It’s fun and it’s very much like a carnival atmosphere every first Thursday you do have to pinch yourself though because sometimes it hard to believe you’re in hackney and its pretty cool place to be at present and long may it continue .

Yes folks, its more exclusive footage from The Fringe Road Show at the Young Vic Theatre in London.
ShowcaseFringe.tv strongly advises you to watch this video. No, in fact we insist. Why? So we can help Britain’s future talent.
When it comes to the Edinburgh festival only words of wisdom flow from the mouths of razor sharp ‘Times’ chief comedy critic, Dominic Maxwell and astute Fringe Press Officer Owen O’ Leary. Fielding questions from an audience of fringe fledglings the expertise of the straight talking duo delivers absorbing answers.
It was Thomas Edison who said, ‘Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration…’ He was right, especially when one is acting on stage. So tread the boards with a game plan. Assess the situation. What is your angle? What is your hook? Even if you have a low budget try and procure a publicist to help create some poise in the press. Give yourself a fighting chance and it could be you who become’s a pin up performer in the public eye.

Okay ladies and gentleman here’s another ShowcaseFringe. tv exclusive with footage from the highly anticipated Fringe Road Show at the Young Vic Theatre in London....
Are you eager for your act to create a barnstorming buzz at Edinburgh? Perhaps you are just curious as to how new talent is spotted? You may be despondent and feel that the chances of being noticed by the media are about as slim as a size zero model! Fortunately your questions, hopes and fears can be addressed with this fascinating talk between Fringe Press Officer Owen O’ Leary and the Times chief comedy reviewer Dominic Maxwell.
In this incredibly insightful and interesting interview, Mr. Maxwell highlights the spontaneous logic that reporters use as they try to find the ‘next big thing’ at the summer festival. As an ex performer and a prominent journalist at the world’s largest comedy bash, the Times scribe certainly knows a thing or two when it comes to attracting the press in ‘Auld Reekie’. There is undoubtedly an element of luck involved in gaining recognition but this video shows that amid the chaos a bit of strategy will definitely help for that special moment when the nerves are jangling and the adrenaline is high as the curtain raises and its time to perform...

Thomas Borch Nielsen is the director of Sunshine Barry & the Disco Worms an animated film about a disco worm, who is fed up with being at the bottom of the food chain. One day, an old disco record turns his life upside down, and suddenly there's light ahead Barry wants to start the world's greatest disco band. His toe-tapping tale under lines the power of the boogie.

Ramchand Pakistani is a simple story, true story about a father and son who accidental crossing of the India-Pakistan border during a period of extreme, war-like tension between the two countries and are held captive in an Indian prison. A theme like this ought to be handled with kid gloves and director Mehreen Jabbar does just that. A sensitively told story that succeeds in making you think of the plight of scores of people who've accidentally crossed the border and are, perhaps, still languishing in various jails.

Azazel Jacobs is a man on a family mission, as the director of momma's man he talks about his film and the making of his funny comedy. The story is about a man who decides of return to his parents homes during his mid life crisis and find himself staying long than planned.
To make this Jacob’s used his real family home and this parents as actors, talk about keeping it in the family.
Ole Christian Madsen the director of the second world war spy thriller FLAME & CITRON didn’t go as far as Jacobs, but enlisted the help of Denmark’s finest actors in Mad Mikkelsen and Thure Lindhardt to craft his beautiful and well made film about a story of the Danish resistances.

THREE BLIND MICE is a story about three Australian naval service men shipped off to Iraq, The film is directed by Matthew Newton who also stars in the film as harry who goes on shore leave, Harry just wants to let rip. Gambling, women and practical jokes all fuelled by booze – produce some interesting results.
QUICK GUN MURUGAN and director are one, This director‘s
Shashank Ghosh's personality is stamped all over this film because once you get talking to him you get a great scene of where the comedy motivations have come from. His curry western spoof with attitude features outlandish songs, outrageous melodrama and crazy action sequences including a classic duel in a traffic jam.

[Comments] CHAZ ROYAL’S BURLESQUE BAZAAR

As part of the London fetish weekend Chaz royal's sexy circus side show & burlesque bazaar lived up to all expectations. It’s hard to believe that Chaz has only been organizing these events for a couple of years now but the impact that the shows are having spreads wider than the burlesque arena. In entertaining the audience and not taking them for granted, chaz seems to have built up a loyal following as testament to this everyone stayed until the end on a late Sunday night at the bush hall near shepherds bushs.
Hosted by Vaudevillian Maestro armitage shanks who cleverly held everything together and got everyone including me to join in the elephant dance very funny.
First up on LYDIA DARLING who is a skilled performer and aerialist her
Beautiful act takes place above your head, talks about her new show.
HONOR MISSION what can we say about this lady at 6 ft 1 towers over most guys, her mission seems to dominate the audience into submission by smashing up her set of 'Attack of the 50 Foot Woman!' and then jumping into the audience terrifying all the men. But at hart is a gentle burlesque giant.
STELLA PLUMES to my mind is not just burlesque performer she would quite happily fit into a comedy film or stage show dazzles her audience with poetry ahead of her main routine.
WARREN SPEED is not just unusual because he’s dressed as Charlie Chaplin but also is a male burlesque performer and a quit good one to boot. See more in part 2

[Comments] The London Film Festival

This week saw the announcement of the official programme of the London Film Festival which kicks off next month. The programme is packed with exiting new films from all corners of the globe including Holloway Road(Telstar directed by Nick Moran) , more of this later.

The Opening Gala film is Ron Howard's new film "Frost/Nixon," which is about the former president Richard Nixon and his encounter with David Frost.

There are many big hitters such as Oliver Stone's "W.” the story of George W. Bush’s rise to power played by Josh Brolin and an all star cast, “The Shindig”, and "1 2 3 4" from director Giles Borg. The big surprise through was the announcement that Quantum of Solace, the next instalment of the James Bond franchise will be part of the festival.

Moving on to the British entries, we were fortunate to have interviews with director Pat Holden about his forthcoming film Awaydays. We also spoke with Destiny Ekaragha who at 26 has just completed her first short film Tight Jeans. Riz Ahmed also speaks at length about his role as drug dealer Shifty in the film of the same name.

Returning to Telstar, shot in the Holloway Road area (a stone’s throw from our office) we can tell you that we will be doing a special feature on the film during the festival, so watch this space.
